Nietzsche’s Ãœbermensch vs. Ideal Person

Nietzsche’s Ãœbermensch vs. Ideal Person Nietzsche stressed on the importance of individualism and intuitive thought over the dominant philosophies of his day—liberal democracy and Christian ethics. The ascetic ideal that Christian ethics pushes for gives value above all else to chastity, humility and poverty. These ideals are widely accepted in Western societies, as they are largely influenced by the Church. But to Nietzsche, these ideals contradict the perpetuation of life itself. They are values that lead man to his self-destruction while, at the same time, Church doctrines still propounds that aiming for that ascetic life would give him ultimate meaning. Such doctrine was actually a slave morality for Nietzsche, which also applies to liberal democracy, where citizens herded into a movement that glorified mediocrity of the masses. Even in situations where such an ideal destroys life, when a sick society is worn down and all other hopes are gone, this Christian ethic, according to Nietzsche, exploits men by teaching that that very suffering is ideal. For Nietzsche this was plainly foolish, for how can there be hope when all hope for meaning has been lost. It is simply ludicrous to make something ideal when it is really sickness. For this reason, a society already suffering that values their very state of poverty are sicker because what they are desiring is “nothingness”. Nietzsche strongly believed that man will only become something or someone if he desires something. He elevates his stature only through his will and the desire to dominate others. He believed that, ideally, this instinct is accompanied by pride, courage, and other heroic virtues. However, somewhere along history, civilization has come to believe that it is humility and meekness that should be exemplified and that these are the qualities of an “Ideal person”. Soren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher and theologian, for one wrote that an ideal person should exemplify inwardness to God by understanding objective truths. Inwardness and virtuousness, it seems for many, were the only bridge towards God and becoming the ideal person. But to Nietzsche an ideal person exemplifies an outwardness, built upon by oneself. He does not need to bridge himself towards God—because God is dead—he only needs to throw himself onto the world and establish his being. This is what Ãœbermensch, or "superman", meant. It is quasi-biblical stance that Nietzsche passionately employed to inspire readers to become more than they have been by elevating themselves above conventional morality. Nietzsche believed that the West could be saved from decadence only by a transvaluation, or a reversal of values, that would lead them to become superior beings and that it is only through the ability of the supermen that their achievements transcend to heroic proportions. He believes that civilization should give up their ascetic ideals and rather submit themselves to a life that is life-affirming than life-negating. The only way to do this is to change the way he formulates ideals and re-learn everything. He must abandon any doctrine that teaches that life can only have meaning if there are fixed moral values and absolute truths. He must abandon his direction toward becoming a Christian ideal person, but tread the path of the Ãœbermensch. Man, according to Nietzsche, have gone done to a level that he is willing to worship anything that he has become dependent on someone (God), who is dead. This is the main difference between the ideal person and the superman. The former being dependent on supposed Supreme Being; the latter pushes things for himself, seeing himself as the supreme being. The superman freely chooses the arena. Meanwhile, most men wouldn’t. They cower from such world instead because they would never freely give up the security found in religions and social groups in return of living a life of poverty. Nietzsche tremendously inspired his readers that Nazi propagandists used his book Thus Spoke Zarathustra in emphasizing individuality and national power.

The Battle of Fort Wagner

When civil war tore America from within, the battle became so desperate that the North and the South had to adopt new policies in regard to slavery in order to win. The South made use of slaves to increase their manual labor in armoring their forts and delivering their armaments. The North, on the other hand, made use of freed African-Americans to join their regiments. This was the 1989 war movie was all about—the raising of consciousness to both Blacks and Whites of their new roles in this country. However, the reasons of the war can be seen in various perspectives. The Union wanted to bring about the economic model that supported the use of paid workers as a force of labor. Because workers who get paid enable themselves to buy things that other workers made—this in effect, not only frees people but also frees the market. The Confederacy wanted to preserve slavery because they needed them for the cotton industry. Slavery provided them free manual labor. But when you ask why African Americans wanted to volunteer in the war, their answer would be for their freedom. That’s it. This is the differences between the Northern and Southern troops from the Blacks who joined the rank. Thus, the film then explores the contrasting outlook of black and white soldiers in the Union Army, and the stark realities that they still face despite the change of what President Abraham Lincoln was trying to bring. When the 54th Regiment was assembled under the command of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, we could immediately see although these proud African-Americans were legally free, they were still suffering from a social system that is very discriminative of them. In fact, during their training, the storyline presents a borderline where it was hard to tell whether 54th regiments troops were being discriminated or the training was just as harsh for everyone. It was even hard to argue on who was right between Shaw and his Major Cabot Forbes, who criticized Shaw for not treating these men like men. Indeed, except for Thomas Searles, most of the troops were uneducated. They couldn’t even tell where left and right are. But they deserve respect. But discrimination becomes really apparent when 54th regiment troops were being played at by holding out their supplies of rifles, socks and shoes. Their uniforms were probably delayed because officials were hesitant of seeing African-Americans wearing blue. There was also the incident that since they were colored soldiers, they will not be paid the $13/month, as promised, only $10. And as the regiment proceeded down South where Shaw joined his regiment with Col. James Montgomery, who had his own Negro army, they were reduced in performing manual labor. According Montgomery, these Negroes were only “monkey children” who they have to control. No one expects them to actually fight in the front lines. And for the military officials and the media, the 54th regiment only served as poster boys for the Union, which Shaw opposed lengthily. Moreover, we could see that 54th regiment was serving under a system that still needed to come to grips that a Negro can earn a rank and respect just as a white man—that, in effect, a Negro can elevate his status in the society. In the end, when the 54th regiment volunteered as the lead troops to assault Fort Wagner. Half of the men were killed including Shaw and Trip. Despite falling in the assault, their valor sparked more African-Americans to join the Union’s war efforts. According to the movie, there were some 187,000 black men in uniform by the end of civil war. To that effect, Abraham Lincoln considered them as instrumental in securing victory against the confederates.
